Math and Art
Hello, I’m currently a second-year student at Pasadena City College planning on majoring in Math…maybe double with Art History or Art. I switched from Art to Math last spring, so I need to stay for a total of three years in order to complete the prerequisites before transferring. I’ll be applying in the upcoming fall.
I’m really uncertain about being a math major. I’ve always loved math and did really well until I took Calculus AB and BC during my last two years of high school.
I passed my AP exams with 4s, and retook the Calculus classes at PCC as Math 5A and Math 5B, recieving a B and an A in the classes. I still need to take the last of the Calculus series, Math 5C, as well as two more math classes and the physics series.
Right now I’m having doubts because although I recieved an A in 5B, I didn’t do so well on the exams. I just lucked into a really nice professor. I’ve just begun the first course in the Physics series, my exam tomorrow will cover material from dimensional analysis to two-dimensional motion. I have trouble grasping the concepts or applying the formulas to the problems, needless to say I’m not confident at all. I wish physics wasn’t a prerequisite, and I need to finish the entire deng series.
I have a few questions, and hope somebody can help me with their experience:
1. How are the upper division math major courses? How are the Math, Art History and Art departments in Berkeley?
2. Should I switch majors now, if lower division classes are any indication of how well I would do later, since everything is cumulative and will gradually become more difficult?
3. I’ve already completed 58 transferrable credits. It’ll reach 70 when I finish this semester, and since I have a year of high unit classes left to complete, I’m worried I wouldn’t be accepted because I’ve gone way over the max.
Sometimes I just want to say eff it, and major in something easy for me like Art History. I have no passion for it though. Art is something I can and would rather pursue in my own time. I don’t want to waste my education.
I’m already a second-year, should have applied to transfer by now, still don’t know what to do.
Sorry for the long post and rant, let me know if it’s inappropriate and I’ll edit or delete. Thanks :]
Now off to study for my first physics midterm!
